April 7, 2003 - Las Vegas, Nevada The Serial Digital
Interface (SDI) standard is one of the main connecting methodologies
used inside modern broadcast facilities. The SMPTE 259M Master
FD was created by CMI, professional video/broadcast division,
DVEO, to provide PC-based video servers, compression workstations,
and non-linear video editors an inexpensive way to bring in
Serial Digital video from any SDI compatible peripherals,
such as professional video recording decks from Sony and JVC.
The primary function of the SMPTE 259M is to ingest previously
created or converted video via SDI into a PC server for processing.
The SMPTE 259M is a full duplex device but its not an encoder,
so it will not convert analog video to 8 or 10bit SDI, it
merely brings in the video.
"This is one obvious and novel application for this type
of interface card because it offers inexpensive inputs and
it is well suited for software-based MPEG compression. Recently
several companies have created MPEG encoders that will likely
need our card for input and/or output only. Once SDI is brought
in, a host-based software will process the files and the results
can be outputted to another device via DVB-ASI, " stated Les
